Okay, here's the deal. I live in a very rural area in Georgia, and there is this baptist church that keeps putting up signs that read " Islam will take you to hell" , " Catholicism will take you to hell" , " Pray for our perverted president" , " Abortion will take you to hell" and other things. With the abortion one, they actually took naked baby dolls and hung them by their necks and covered them with ketchup, and hung this on their sign. Today, I see that they have the " Catholicism will take you to hell" sign, and I dropped my son off at my mothers and returned to the church to take the sign down for they have personally offended me for the last time. The preacher of this church comes out and calls the police, which I was very polite and complying, to have me arrested for defacing private property. The officer got there and I had the choice of either putting the letters back on his sign, or go to jail. I have a two year old son to think about, so very grudgingly I put the letters back. Now, there has to be a legal way for me to stop this. I intend to write a letter to the editor of our local paper expressing my views on this, and I also intend to get the Catholic church involved in it however I can. I would like to form a protest, because I have several citizens of my county that share my beliefs in that this church should now be allowed to post offensive comments on a state highway. I need to know where the 'public land' which would be the immediate land off the road ends, and his private property starts so that I can be sure to be legal. I have also already contacted the news about it, and they have come out and did a report on the matter. But I do not intend to stop until this man is stopped from expressing such vulgar opinions in a public fashion. Does anyone know where the line stops for the public property? And what are my rights as a protestor? Please, any information, as well as other ideas as to how to solve this issue will be helpful. I refuse to believe that the first ammendment gives him the freedom of speech to say these things, and yet does not give me the freedom to retort.
