Question: Can anyone recommend a good buddhist temple in the tumwater, olympia, washington area? (Posted by: DeeprBlue on 2008-06-27 14:54:38) I'm recently converting to Buddhism and trying to learn on my own, without an affiliation, is difficult. Am looking for recommendations. Thanks so much! |

Posted by: P'ang on 2008-06-27, 15:11:31 Yes, it can be challenging to settle into Buddhist practice without the support of a community. In fact, that's the only reason Buddhist communities exist at all -- to support one another in practice. Here are some Buddhist centers and temples near you: Tumwater > >Thurston Insight Meditation Group nwdharma.org/ groupdirectory.php?memberid= 583 Olympia > >Bodhi House bodhihouse.org/ events.htm > >Nalanda Institute nalandaolywa.org > >Olympia Meditators nwdharma.org/ groupdirectory.php?memberid= 228 > >Open Gate Zendo boundlessmindzen.org/ > >Olympia Mahayana Buddhist Center meditateinolympia.org/ Since you're fortunate enough to have several groups nearby, I recommend that you visit each of them and see if you feel a particular affinity to one group and its teacher. Then settle in at that center and practice regularly with them. Best wishes on your path! = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = Later edit: There's also the Blue Heron Zen Community, which has several locations in Puget Sound. The closest to you in in Lakewood (South Tacoma). I know the teacher there -- he's quite wonderful. You might check them out. blueheronzen.org/ locations.html |

Posted by: The_Cricket: Shmily on 2008-06-27, 14:59:37 There's one on 72nd Ave in Tacoma, between Pacific and McKinley, if I remember correctly. I'm not sure where any are in Tumwater or Olympia, though. You can always look in the phone book...if there are any, they should have them listed. 17th and Fawcett is much further from Tumwater/ Olympia than 72nd, though. Maybe the one on 72nd isn't still there? I didn't think to check when I was home for Christmas. |

Posted by: salishlady on 2008-06-27, 15:00:08 I don't think there is one. LIttle old washington is a bit behind the rest of the world. Bainbridge Island might have one. Oh heck what do I know. I'm Muslim. I'd google it if I were you. But I am pretty sure Bainbridge has one. We have a couple of monks anyways. |
